Links & Resources - Last Updated 15 July 2002

Getting Started - Top Picks UPDATED!

If you're new to VRML/X3D and don't really know how to get started, I've compiled my current pick of resources to hopefully save you some time in trawling through the maze of stuff out there. Of course these are my personal, subjective picks only - I'm not trying to start a flame war about what products are better, so please don't email me with any evangelical rants ;-)

1. If you're a poor struggling student

2. If you're on a tight budget

3. If money's no object

Check below for relevant descriptions and links.

If you don't think VRML/X3D is your scene but you still want to get into Web3D then I'd suggest Macromedia Shockwave3D which is a proprietary format that is currently garnering a lot of industry support.

Blender3D UPDATE!
Blender3D is also extremely promising. Although the parent company NaN (Not a Number) is no more, the software is being released as open source, which is a huge plus for the Web3D community! www.blender3d.com

Other Web3D Technologies

This is only a selection of the existing and emerging Web3D technologies. Every tech-head wants to re-invent the wheel i.e. "my 3D engine is bigger and better than yours!" Quite silly really. All it does is create confusion and fragmentation with existing and more importantly, potential content creators. Why can't the major industry players simply get behind an international standard effort like X3D? Just my 2c.

The present pace of varied development is being driven by the perceived demand for e-commerce 3D product visualisation, online entertainment, multi-user communities, training and eCRM (customer relationship management). They’re all worth taking a look at. Some will flourish, but many will flounder. The ones that succeed are, in my opinion, likely to have the following characteristics:

  1. Easy to author (eg. cost effective tools with little or no programming required)
  2. Small or no plug-in download required to view content
  3. Cross-platform compatible (PC, Mac, Unix etc.)
  4. Impressive, practical content (Content is king!)
  5. Photorealistic rendering effects (eg. reflections, anti-aliasing, shadows etc.)
  6. Easy to integrate with other Web and multimedia content
  7. Based on open standards?
  8. General purpose 3D/VR (i.e. not just "spin and zoom" product viewers)
  9. Money behind them (for promotion and ongoing development)
  10. Lots of luck!

Recommendations UPDATED!
At last count there were over 200 web 3D technologies, literally thousands of 3D game engines and many high-end vis-sim scene graphs/APIs. Many technologies are no longer developed or available and new technologies emerge almost on a weekly basis. My advice is to either stick with the only ISO standard i.e. VRML/X3D or choose a company that has diversified interests or has partners with a lot of cash. As I see it, this limits choices for professional Web 3D developers to:

X3D – Extensible 3D
This is the Web3D Consortium’s effort to create an ISO standard replacement for the old VRML97 specification. It is fully backward compatible with VRML but adds new features, better integration with other standardized web technologies through XML, easier implementation through profiles and better extensibility through components. Supports VRML97 (ASCII), XML and potentially binary encodings. www.web3d.org/x3d

Shout3D
Shout Interactive’s proposal for X3D. Small Java 1.1 applet that works on all platforms (with Java installed) and downloads with the content. Rapidly evolving with export capability from 3DS MAX and Spazz3D. Can be authored with other VRML tools – it’s just a matter of using only the nodes specified in Shout3D’s documentation. Some impressive demos and content online. Take a look at www.excitextreme.com/fashion/. www.shout3d.com and www.shoutinteractive.com. An official guide book is also available (see books above).

Blaxxun3D
Blaxxun’s proposal for X3D. As per Shout3D but the two systems are not compatible. Both Blaxxun3D and Shout3D can be integrated with Web pages, Javascript and Java to create custom 2D controls for the 3D world. Blaxxun3D exporter available for 3D Studio MAX. www.blaxxun.com/products/blaxxun3d

TurnTool
Promising real-time 3D web technology. Use 3DS MAX plus the free TurnToolBox authoring plug-in to create content. www.turntool.com

Sony Blendo
Sony's proposal for X3D. Currently under development from Chris Marrin and team. Seems to fix many of the issues that VRML had and adds extra functionality specifically for broadcast and interactive TV content creation. www.blendomedia.com

Java3D
Java3D is an extension to Sun’s Java2 programming language. You must know Java to author using this technology. Java3D has classes to view and work with VRML files so there is some level of interoperability here but this is really a programmer’s domain at this stage. Although Java 1.1 has been supported by all platforms and Web browsers for some time, Java may not be supported natively in future Microsoft operating systems. At present you have to download and install the Java2 & Java 3D extensions before use or alternatively embed the Java2 Plugin in your web pages. java.sun.com/products/java-media/3D/index.html

Sumea
Sumea is a group of artists that use small Java applets that render astonishing quality real-time 3D with Java 1.1. No authoring tools at all. Simply an impressive demonstration of Java programming and 3D design. www.sumea.com

Cycore Cult3D
Free creator and viewer software. Creator is for 3DS Max so therefore Windows only. Viewer available for all platforms. Pay license to host Cult3D objects on your web server. Can embed content in Web pages, PowerPoint presentations and Adobe Acrobat documents. Impressive rendering effects and integration with various multimedia and presentation technologies make this one to watch. www.cult3d.com and www.cycore.com

Viewpoint VET (formerly MetaCreations MetaStream)
High quality rendering with streaming download (displays more detail as it is downloaded – like progressive JPEG images) and impressive rendering. Scooped the 2001 Siggraph Web3D Round-Up awards. Available for Windows and Mac. www.viewpoint.com

Flatland (3dml)
Flatland's web publishing format, 3DML (Three Dimensional Markup Language), empowers Webmasters to quickly create their own visually compelling rich media environments called "Spots." Designed for Web3D novices in that your worlds (or Spots as they call them) can be authored with simple HTML-like tags. www.flatland.com

Wild Tangent
